Hi, and welcome to Japan Family Compass.
I’m a Japanese mom based in Tokyo, raising two young children. I created this site to help families travel around Japan with a little more confidence — and a lot less stress.
Traveling in Japan with children can be wonderful, but some of the most useful information can be surprisingly hard to find in English.
Which train station exit has an elevator?
Is a popular attraction actually enjoyable with a toddler?
Can you easily use a stroller there?
Where can you take a break, eat with kids, or buy diapers nearby?
These are the kinds of questions I think about every time I go somewhere with my own children.
What You’ll Find Here
Japan Family Compass focuses on practical, family-friendly travel information for parents visiting Japan.
You’ll find guides about:
- Things to do in Tokyo and around Japan with kids
- Traveling in Japan with babies and toddlers
- Stroller-friendly transportation and routes
- Family-friendly hotels and restaurants
- Indoor activities for rainy or hot days
- Practical tips for everyday travel with children
- Honest reviews of places I visit with my own family
Whenever possible, I include the small details that can make a big difference when you’re traveling with children.
A Local Parent’s Perspective
There are already many excellent Japan travel guides online.
Japan Family Compass is a little different.
Rather than simply listing famous attractions, I try to look at Japan from a parent’s point of view.
I live here, travel around Japan with my children, and experience many of the same practical challenges that visiting families face — carrying bags, finding elevators, planning around naps and meals, and wondering whether an attraction is really worth the effort with young children.
When I personally visit a place, I share what worked for us, what was inconvenient, and what I would want another parent to know before going.
My Goal
My goal is simple:
To make traveling in Japan with kids easier, more enjoyable, and less overwhelming.
Japan is an incredibly family-friendly country in many ways, but navigating an unfamiliar city with children can still feel complicated.
I hope Japan Family Compass can be a practical guide you can turn to while planning your trip — and even while you’re already here.
Thank you for visiting, and I hope your family has an unforgettable time in Japan.
